A 34-year-old man was killed in a forklift accident while working at a construction site in Queens on Tuesday, March 13. The man’s family is demanding answers regarding the safety of the site, where a luxury high-rise project was being built. The construction site has a history of violations – 37 open violations, with 13 of them being assessed in the last year alone. The developer also owes the city of New York $67,000 in fines. There was also a stop work order on the site, but that does not prevent workers from storing materials, which is what was going on when the accident happened.
The man was working from a forklift when he struck his head on a low beam on the ceiling. Officers found him unconscious and pinned by a machine at the site. The Department of Buildings issued a violation for failing to secure the construction site, and additional enforcement is expected pending investigation.
Man Fatally Struck After Bailing From Car Driven By Drunk Girlfriend
A 30-year-old Queens man was killed after jumping from a vehicle during an argument with his girlfriend, who was driving the vehicle. The incident occurred on Saturday, March 10 at around 4 a.m. on the Grand Central Parkway. After jumping from the slow-moving vehicle, the man was struck by another oncoming car. He was rushed to Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where he eventually passed away a short time later. His girlfriend was arrested for drunk driving after testing for more than twice the legal limit.
8-Year-Old Girl Injured After Being Struck By Falling Wood In Queens
An 8-year-old girl suffered serious head injuries after she was struck by a piece of wood that fell from a construction site in Queens on Friday, February 23. The incident occurred at around 9:35 a.m. when the piece of wood fell from a fourth-floor fire escape in the courtyard of her family’s apartment building. She suffered a mild concussion and a head wound, which required three staples to close. Construction crews were lowering wood planks from the fire escape to the ground, when one of the pieces slipped from the rope and fell, striking the girl in the head. The Department of Buildings cited the contractor and issued a full stop work order to the cite. They also issued three violations, including failure to safeguard a construction site.
